A brick storefront and a 20-foot steel beam cascaded onto a Fourth Street sidewalk Monday, damaging two parked cars but sparing pedestrians.
The vacant building at 309 W. Fourth St., adjacent to the Heartland Cafe, spontaneously collapsed with a roar and a plume of dust, startling anyone in the vicinity.
“There was a rumbling, a shaking, then a crash and a big cloud of dust,” said Jessy Alsop, an intern at Alternatives to Violence, the nonprofit group whose offices are in the building immediately east of the one that fell. “It was so loud. We went outside, and there was just dust rising everywhere.”
