We’re all dressed up, but where do we go?
If the AMC Cancer Fund’s award-winning fundraiser, Dinner in White is your destination, the locale will be Tweeted and e-mailed at 6 p.m. Aug. 13 — one hour before the dining, dancing and bidding begins.
A secret location and high-tech notification system are two of the elements that helped Dinner in White win the Best Special Fundraising Event award given in 2010 by the Association of Fundraising Professionals. Another factor was the party’s appeal to a younger demographic.
Dinner in White is adapted from Diner en Blanc, which started in 1988 when Francois Pasquier was returning to Paris after a lengthy absence and invited friends to meet him for a dinner party in the Bois de Boulogne. To make it easier to find each other, he requested that everyone wear white.
Pasquier’s dinner party was so popular that an adaptation of it continues today. This year, it was held on the grounds of two Parisian landmarks, the cathedral at Notre Dame and a courtyard at the Louvre. New York will have its first Diner en Blanc on Aug. 25.
Denver was the first U.S. city to have the event.
Tickets for Dinner in White are $50, and include drinks and dessert. Guests bring their own picnic supper.
“You will be dazzled and entertained,” promises AMC Cancer Fund’s vice president of community relations, Nancy Stewart. “We are bringing Paris to you for a magical evening under the stars. Our guests will sip on French cocktails, shop in a Parisian marketplace, take a spin on the dance floor and relax under the glow of the night.”
Everyone is asked to dress in white.
Le Central restaurant is offering attendees a 25 percent discount on their picnic boxes ordered in advance. Le Central also will provide macarons for the dessert tent, and will have a pastry chef at the party to hand-dip and decorate chocolate covered strawberries.
AMC Cancer Fund raises awareness, and funds, for the University of Colorado Cancer Center’s programs in prevention, care, education and research. Dr. Dan Theodorescu is the center’s director.
