A mountain climber died this week in an apparent fall on Crestone Peak in southern Colorado.

The victim, Keith Dean Rose, 50, of Arvada, likely fell during a descent of the mountain on Monday evening, said Art Nordyke, Custer County Coroner.

Rose fell about 30 feet in the Broken Hand Pass area of the mountain. A flashlight was found beside his body, Nordyke said. Rose was alone at the time of the fall.

His vehicle was parked in a trailhead parking lot and a search and rescue team found his body at about 12,500-feet elevation on Tuesday. Stormy weather hit the area and the body could not be taken off of the mountain until Wednesday, after the weather cleared.

The El Paso County Coroner’s Office will perform an autopsy. The Custer County Coroner’s Office did not release an official cause of death.
