STANFORD, Calif. — Missy Franklin’s recent dominance in the pool took a breather Thursday, while Colorado Stars teammate and former Olympian Kara Lynn Joyce stole some of the spotlight at the U.S. championships.

Franklin, an incoming junior this fall at Regis Jesuit High School who won her first national title in the 100-meter backstroke Wednesday on the heels of capturing five medals at the world championships in Shanghai, failed to advance to the final of the 50 freestyle. The 16-year-old triple gold medalist at worlds, however, was second in the consolation final at 25.54 seconds.

Joyce, a four-time Olympic silver medalist who joined the Stars this year, finished third in the event in 25.19. Lara Jackson won the gold medal at 24.98, while Madison Kennedy was second at 25.09.

Franklin and Joyce then teamed with Caroline Piehl and Jordan Mattern for a fourth-place finish in the 4×200 freestyle relay.

Also, Elizabeth Beisel won the 400 individual medley four days after winning the world title in Shanghai.
