An intoxicated driver crashed into a house in Centennial early this morning near Yosemite and County Line roads.
The Sauer family, who live in the house, was unharmed and the driver of the car was taken to Littleton Adventist Hospital as a precaution, said Lt. David Thompson with the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Department.
The name of the driver is not being released, but has been charged with driving under the influence.
At approximately 5:30 a.m. the Mitsubishi Montero was traveling north down Yosemite Street.
Jeff Sauer said his back yard is edged by Yosemite. No fence separates the busy street from the neighborhood.
“All of a sudden I heard a loud noise. It sounded like an explosion, and the whole house shook,” Sauer said.
He knew the car struck the back wall of his house when he heard the wind chimes he was storing there jingle.
The car ruptured a sewer line in the house, dislodged a beam and tore a hole in the drywall.
A City of Centennial building inspector estimated there was $10,000 worth of damage, Thompson said.
Sauer said he is concerned about how busy the Yosemite has become after the opening of IKEA and other area shops.
Mary Whitfield, Sauer’s neighbor, said she would like to see a brick wall built to separate the neighborhood from Yosemite.
“It’s kind of scary since their child and my grandchildren spend so much time in our backyard and their backyard,” Whitfield said.
