The Denver Outlaws earned their sixth straight Major League Lacrosse playoff berth Saturday with a 14-11 win over the Long Island Lizards in Hempstead, N.Y.
The Outlaws broke a 5-5 halftime tie with a two-point, power-play goal by Drew Westervelt, then followed with goals by Peet Poillon and Sean DeLaney to take a 9-5 lead. The Lizards cut the lead to 10-9 early in the fourth quarter, but Westervelt and Terry Kimener scored to secure Denver’s win and a 10-0 all-time record against Long Island.
Goalie Jesse Schwartzman stopped 10-of-21 shots. Westervelt had two goals and the two-pointer, and Poillon, Brendan Mundorf and Max Seibald each scored twice.
Coburn places eighth in London Grand Prix.
University of Colorado senior-to-be Emma Coburn finished eighth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the London Grand Prix in a personal record of 9 minutes, 37.16 seconds. Coburn shaved three seconds off her previous best. Milcah Chemos Cheywa of Kenya won with a time of 9:22.80.
Denver racers fare well at Mid-Ohio.
Denver sports car racers Alex Figge and Robb Holland each won their first Pirelli World Challenge races. Figge won the GT class and overall victory at the Pirelli World Challenge Grand Prix and Holland won the touring car race, both at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.
Garmin’s Martin third at Tour of Pologne.
Peter Sagan of Slovakia and the Liquigas team got a two-second bonus on an intermediate sprint stage and another six-second bonus on the final sprint to overtake Team Garmin-Cervelo rider Daniel Martin and win the Tour of Pologne. Sagan finished second in the final stage, an 80-mile loop around Krakow, Poland. Martin, the defending champion, finished third.
