OGDEN, Utah — Jesse Anthony made up for what he called a stupid early attack by winning a five-way sprint to the finish Wednesday in the first stage of the Tour of Utah.

Prologue winner Sergio Henao of Colombia retained the yellow jersey by finishing a close second in the 113.6-mile stage that climbed three times over North Ogden Pass in the Wasatch Mountains.

“I can’t believe it,” said an emotional Anthony, who called the stage victory the biggest of his career.

Thomas Danielson was eighth overall, and his Garmin-Cervelo teammate Christian Vandevelde was ninth.

Phinney still in yellow.

Taylor Phinney of Boulder finished sixth in the second stage of the Eneco Tour, a 108-mile ride from Aalter to Ardooie, Belgium, and retained the overall lead.

Phinney leads Edvald Boasson Hagen of Norway, who finished third in Wednesday’s stage, by three seconds, and Garmin-Cervelo’s David Millar by eight seconds.

Andre Greipel of Germany won the stage, and Garmin’s top sprinter, Tyler Farrar, was second.
