The Denver/Boulder Better Business Bureau is celebrating its 60th anniversary today.

The BBB was late coming to the Denver metro area. When it was founded on Aug. 10, 1951, it was one of the few cities its size without a BBB. It had existed nationally since 1912.

In its first year in Denver, it was staffed by 10 full-time employees and was supported by more than 500 local businesses. It now has a staff of 43 full-time employees and is supported by more than 7,000 local businesses and charities.

The Denver Chamber of Commerce helped in founding the Denver/Boulder BBB in 1951.

Dale Mingilton, president and CEO of the Denver/Boulder BBB, said that the organization’s existence is due to the business and nonprofit sectors in the area who have supported the agency.

He said consumers have consistently turned to the BBB for free advice and help.Howard Pankratz: 303-954-1939 or hpankratz@denverpost.com.
