The Denver district attorney’s office has begun a formal criminal investigation of Watson Memorial Co., the headstone company near Fairmount Cemetery that shuttered without notice in July.
The monument maker’s phone has been disconnected, and customers have complained that stones they have paid for were not delivered. They complained to the Better Business Bureau and left notes at the company but have received few answers.
District attorney spokeswoman Lynn Kimbrough said the Economic Crime Unit has heard from 10 customers and sent paperwork to eight more.
“It was determined a formal investigation was warranted,” she said.
The district attorney’s office began considering a criminal investigation three weeks ago after it became aware of a number of complaints filed with the BBB.
Watson owner Andrew Noe has not returned calls seeking comment. His sister, Tammy McCarty, says she has not heard from him and that there is pending legal action against him.
Customers who have not already contacted the DA can phone 720-913-9179 and provide information about their experience with the business. The unit will send the customers a packet asking for details, including how much money the business owes them.
