DENVER—The Denver Zoo has received two large rodents called capybaras (Cap-ee-bar-as) from the Buffalo Zoo.
The brother and sister capybaras were born Feb. 17.
Capybaras look somewhat like guinea pigs but can grow to about 4 feet long and weigh up to 140 pounds.
Their numbers had dropped due to hunting for food and leather, but now their populations have stabilized thanks in part to restrictions on the number that can be legally hunted and the ranching of capybaras for the meat market.
