COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Supporters of embattled Republican Rep. Doug Lamborn are rallying for the congressman in Colorado Springs.
Lamborn apologized to President Barack Obama after comparing the president to a “tar baby” on a radio show last month. Lamborn says he was trying to call the president’s position on the debt ceiling a sticky situation. But the term is sometimes used as a racial epithet. Civil-rights groups have denounced the remark.
Lamborn backers who organized Friday’s afternoon rally say the “tar baby” comment has unfairly overshadowed positive aspects of the congressman. An email promoting the rally suggested slogans for posters backing the three-term Republican.
The rally was scheduled for outside Lamborn’s Colorado Springs office. An organizer said the congressman would not be there.
