MONTREAL — Top-ranked Novak Djokovic advanced to the Rogers Cup final when Jo-Wilfried Tsonga retired from their semifinal match Saturday night because of an apparent right arm injury. Djokovic led 6-4, 3-0 when Tsonga retired.

Djokovic, the Australian Open and Wimbledon champion playing his first tournament since taking the top spot in the world ranking, improved his match record for the year to 52-1, including 28-0 on hard courts.

Djokovic, the Rogers Cup winner in 2007, is seeking his ninth tournament win of the year.

Earlier, sixth-seeded Mardy Fish advanced to his third straight ATP Tour final, beating Janko Tipsarevic 6-3, 6-4.

Serena Williams advanced to the final in the women’s Rogers Cup in Toronto, beating fourth-seeded Victoria Azarenka 6-3, 6-3.

Williams, playing just her fourth tournament since being sidelined for a year by injuries and illness, will face 10th-seeded Samantha Stosur in the final. Stosur beat Agnieszka Radwanska 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.

Former Pioneers keeper dandy in MLS debut

WASHINGTON — Former University of Denver goalkeeper Joe Willis, playing in place of the suspended Bill Hamid, made six saves for a shutout in his MLS debut as D.C. United defeated the Vancouver Whitecaps 4-0.

• Defender Julius James scored the go-ahead goal in the 75th minute as the host Columbus Crew overcame a halftime deficit for a 3-1 victory over the New England Revolution.

Sebastien Le Toux scored twice off penalty kicks as the host Philadelphia Union and FC Dallas tied 2-2.

Joao Plata scored the lone goal as Toronto FC picked up its first league win in more than a month with a 1-0 victory over visiting Real Salt Lake.

Joel Lindpere‘s 63rd-minute goal allowed the host New York Red Bulls to tie the Chicago Fire 2-2.

Dan Kennedy made two saves and got some help from the goalpost on a penalty kick as Chivas USA and the Seattle Sounders played to a scoreless tie.

Kang, Jutanugarn in Amateur final

BARRINGTON, R.I. — Defending champion Danielle Kang and Thailand’s Moriya Jutanugarn advanced to the U.S. Women’s Amateur final at Rhode Island Country Club.

Kang, the 18-year-old Pepperdine star from Westlake Village, Calif., beat University of Alabama player Brooke Pancake, from Chattanooga, Tenn., 1-up. The 17-year-old Jutanugarn edged LSU’s Austin Ernst, the NCAA champion from Seneca, S.C., 1-up.
