ATLANTA — Already banged up for the playoff race, the World Series champion Giants received another blow Tuesday night when starting pitcher Jonathan Sanchez left the game with a sprained left ankle.
The left-hander was hustling to scoop up a sacrifice bunt by Braves pitcher Randall Delgado in the third inning when he slipped in front of the mound, rolling his left ankle before he made an awkward throw to first base from the ground.
Sanchez threw one more pitch, which was nearly over the head of Michael Bourn. He limped off the mound and was replaced by Guillermo Mota.
The Giants began the day putting two players on the 15-day disabled list: outfielder Carlos Beltran (hand) and reliever Sergio Romo (elbow).
Footnotes.
Alex Rodriguez singled and played six innings in the field for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, as the Yankees third baseman continues his minor-league rehabilitation following right knee surgery in July. Rodriguez could rejoin the Yankees on Thursday night in Minnesota.
• Phillies all-star left-hander Cole Hamels will skip at least one turn in the rotation because of shoulder inflammation.
• Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz will out indefinitely because of bursitis in his right heel that requires his foot be placed into a walking boot.
• Blue Jays reliever Jon Rauch was placed on the DL after undergoing appendicitis surgery.
• The White Sox placed catcher A.J. Pierzynski on the DL with a fractured left wrist.
