COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Three organizations are joining to build a new trail up to the summit of Colorado’s Pikes Peak.

The city of Colorado Springs, Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado, and Friends of the Peak will work on the multi-year project and they’re inviting people to volunteer to start building the new trail starting Aug. 20.

The 10-mile trail to the summit would be on the mountain’s south slope, an area that has never been open to the public. Officials say the new trail will help ease congestion and erosion on the Barr Trail, the main path to the peak.

Pikes Peak is Colorado’s 31st-highest mountain. Its majestic views from the summit inspired the lyrics to “America the Beautiful.” The mountain is about 60 miles south of Denver.
