The redevelopment of the former Camera newspaper site in downtown Boulder should be a building that’s iconic and unique, city board members said Thursday night.

The proposed redevelopment of the two-building property off 11th and Pearl streets took its first step in the city’s planning process as the Boulder Planning Board and Landmarks Board reviewed the concept plans at a joint hearing.

No formal action was taken by either board.

The meeting served as a chance for property owner Karlin Real Estate, city officials and members of the public to get their first detailed views of the proposal and provide feedback.

“This has to be an iconic building,” Planning Board Member Andrew Shoemaker said. “It has to be special.”
