Tonight we watch Round 2 of the Great Broncos Quarterback Controversy, starring journeyman Kyle Orton (the favorite of talk show hosts, sports columnists and apparently the entire Broncos coaching staff) vs. young Tim Tebow (the favorite of virtually everyone else).
The Broncos will play the Buffalo Bills tonight at newly christened Sports Authority Field at Mile High — how long will it take us to get used to that name? – but the game, only a preseason game at that, is just a sideshow to the real event.
The great thing about quarterback controversies is that they are both entirely consuming and entirely harmless. It doesn’t really matter who wins the job, whether it’s Orton or Tebow or even Brady Quinn, particularly when this year’s version of the Broncos figures to be only marginally better than a year ago.
It’s football. Arguing about football is not only part of the fun; for those who don’t don pads, it’s maybe most of the fun.
A digital leap forward. Colorado should be known for the Continental Divide, not a digital divide. That’s why we were pleased this week to read of a program to provide low-cost broadband Internet access and computer vouchers in neighborhoods served by Comcast.
An FCC-mandated byproduct of Comcast’s merger with NBC Universal earlier this year, the program is for households in which a student qualifies for free lunch in school.
Full speed ahead, we hope. Ever since John Hickenlooper declared his candidacy for governor, there has been seemingly little energy from Denver’s city hall for completion of FasTracks in a timely manner.
That’s why newly sworn-in mayor Michael Hancock deserves credit for stepping forward this week to help get people back on board.
Hancock hopes to make a “best case” for going to voters next year to increase taxes to complete the transit system well before 2042, which is what is projected based on the current 0.4 tax collection.
We’re eager to hear him make it.
