Denver reached 98 degrees this afternoon, tying a record for the date set in 2009, while Colorado Springs shattered its heat record for the day.

Temperatures in the Springs topped out at 95 degrees, beating the record of 91, also set in 2009, according to the National Weather Service in Denver.

The high tied the hottest day so far this month, Aug. 18, which ties it for the second hottest day of the year in Denver so far. The high of July 31 was 99 degrees.

The normal high temperature at the official monitoring site at Denver International Airport for Aug. 23 is 86 degrees, according to the weather data.

The high on Wednesday is expected to be 90 degrees — well short of the record of 97 set in 1936.

The heat is expected to linger for another week, with daily highs in the low 90s, at a time of year they are normally topping out in the mid-80s, forecasters said.
