LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga.—The state’s largest school district is getting up to $12.5 million from a private foundation to develop quality school leaders and track whether they impact student achievement.
The grant announced Tuesday by the New York City-based Wallace Foundation will work on developing a principal pipeline for Gwinnett County Schools just north of Atlanta. The money will be handed out to Gwinnett County and five other urban school districts over the next five years.
The other districts getting part of the $75 million initiative are: Charlotte-Mecklenburg, N.C.; Denver; Hillsborough County, Fla.; New York City; and Prince George’s County, Md.
The winners were selected from a pool of 90 districts because they have programs under way to groom principals.
