Denver Police are warning people to stay alert in the Confluence Park area where fights resulting in serious injuries and a string of assault charges have broken out over the past month.

Five of the incidents were aggravated assaults, involving either a deadly weapon or severe bodily injury, two were simple assaults and one woman was assaulted in a robbery, according to police. Police have beefed up their presence around the park.

The park where Cherry Creek joins the South Platte River draws night-time crowds attracted by performers called “fire spinners” who juggle flaming batons or other burning objects, Murray said at a media conference.

Some of the visitors “get into fights together,” Murray said. Some of the fights involve transients, he added.

The incidents don’t appear to be random attacks and none of the assaults “would put an average family in danger,” he said. They don’t appear to be gang related.

Murray said police have made a number of arrests connected to the fights. And some of the injured were hospitalized as a result.

Anyone with information about the crimes can contact Crime Stoppers at (720)913-STOP or text to CRIMES (274637) then title DMCS and enter a message or send an e-mail to .
