One casualty came when Italian Daniele Callegarin of Team Type 1-sanofi fell after his wheel hit a cattle guard and he landed face-first.
He broke both hands and suffered face trauma. He was taken to a hospital in Gunnison then airlifted to Denver.
About 12 riders were involved in the crash near the bottom of Cottonwood Pass.
