A Gilcrest man was sentenced this morning in Weld County to a minimum of 10 years in prison.
Vicente Mendez, 23, had been convicted of sexual assault on October 2009, but his sentencing was delayed while an appeal was considered.
The incident occured on October 26, 2008. According to a release from the Weld County District Attorney’s office, the victim stated that she had invited a small group of friends to her home for a get-together.
After the party ended, the victim was followed to bed by Mendez, who began to assault the victim despite her numerous pleadings for him to stop.
The victim was eventually successful in forcing Mendez away from her and was able to call for help.
When detectives interviewed Mendez, he told officers that everything was consensual.
Today he was sentenced to 10 years to life in prison.
