Joe Birrell visits the Bear Creek Trail in southwest Denver about four times a week and said there is always the potential for collisions between cyclists and pedestrians along the narrow path.

“Widening the sidewalk will help because some bikers go really fast,” said Birrell, 67, who walks, runs and rides his bicycle along the trail. “It’s not everybody.”

The city expects to widen a section of the trail to 10 feet this fall to reduce conflicts between cyclists and pedestrians. The city is paying for the $1.8 million project with a mix of federal and capital improvement funds.
