Just after 10:30 Sunday morning, 69 skydivers linked in midair above Vance Brand Municipal Airport to set a state record that the organizer has been trying to beat since 2008.
On its second jump of the day — the last at an altitude that would allow the feat — the team leaped from planes at 15,300 feet above the ground and in 69 seconds positioned themselves to grab hold of one another just long enough to get their picture taken. It was the group’s eighth attempt in a weekend set aside for attempts at the record. That momentary “snowflake” brought Longmont recognition as the host of Colorado’s largest skydiving formation, besting the previous record of 56 set in Lamar.
