The parents of a despondent 16-year-old who ran away from home in Illinois last week have tracked him to Colorado through social media and a downtown Denver ATM machine he tried to use on Friday.

Chris Carpenter went to school in Naperville on Aug. 22, and his parents haven’t heard from him since. They found a letter he had written alluding to a plan to run away and a notation that he might commit suicide, his father, Mike Carpenter, said Monday.

“He’s just depressed,” his father said. “For some reason, he thinks he’s a failure.”

Chris worked at a youth camp in Almont, near Gunnison, this summer and might be going there, his dad said.

Chris is 5 feet 10 inches tall, 150 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes. Anyone who sees him is asked to call Denver police at 720-913-2000 or the Carpenters at 630-908-9468. Joey Bunch, The Denver Post
