A knife-wielding man shot by Thornton police who were responding to a disturbance call remains in critical condition today at a local hospital.

Carlos Jose Castro, 39, was shot by police Monday in the 9700 block of Downing Street, said Matt Barnes, a Thornton Police Department spokesman.

Police suspect Castro of felony menacing and domestic violence in the incident.

Officers were in the front yard of Castro’s home when he came at them with a knife. A stun gun was used on Castro but it was ineffective, police said.

A woman at the home and two children, a 16-year-old girl and 9-year-old boy, were not injured.

Police have been called to the address 12 times since January of 2008. Castro has lived at the home throughout that time, Barnes said. Most of the calls have been on disturbances and domestic violence reports.

The initial disturbance and the shooting remain under investigation.
