Firefighters fought wind and flames to contain a 300-acre grass fire near Elizabeth this afternoon.

Six homes on the edge of the 500-home Sun Country Meadows subdivision in northwest Elbert County were temporarily evacuated as flames neared but no structures were lost, according to fire and sheriff’s department dispatchers.

The fire reportedly started from a lightning strike at about 5 p.m. The blaze was contained in about two hours, and crews are monitoring for flare-ups that might rekindle the blaze this evening.
