Last month became the hottest month of August in Denver history.
The average temperature in the metro area last month was 77 degrees, climbing above the previous record average 76.8 degrees, set in 1937, according to the National Weather Service.
The temperature in Denver reached 98 degrees Wednesday afternoon, tying the 1960 record for the hottest Aug. 31.
The high temperature in Denver today is expected to be around 95 degrees, just shy of the record of 97 degrees set in 1995. That is also record for the hottest day in September.
Wednesday marked a record hot streak for the metro area, with 71 consecutive days above 80 degrees, shattering the previous record of 59 days set in 2002.
Last month tied for the most days in the month of August with temperatures at or above 90 degrees with 22 days. The previous record was set in 1960 and 1995.
Five record highs were matched or set in the month of August, including Wednesday’s record.
On Aug. 18 the high temperature reached 98 degrees, tying with the previous record set for that day in 1986. Again on Aug. 23, the high temperature peaked at 98 degrees, tying with the 2009 record.
On Aug. 24, temperatures reached 98 degrees climbing above the record of 97 degrees set on that day in 1936. On Aug. 25, temperatures peaked at 99 degrees, climbing above the previous record of 96 degrees set in 1913.
