DENVER—Colorado transportation officials say 41 highway construction projects could be impacted if Congress doesn’t extend federal road funding.

Federal highway programs, and the fuel taxes that pay for them, will expire Sept. 30 unless Congress passes short-term extension legislation. The issue will be a priority when members return to work next week but almost any bill with a price tag requires a struggle for passage.

The Colorado Transportation Commission on Thursday urged the state’s congressional delegation to work together to pass funding.

The state pays for transportation projects and then gets reimbursed from the federal government. The projects at issue are for the fiscal year that runs from July 1 through next June 30.

Colorado gets about $500 million a year for highway projects and $200 million for transit from the federal government.
