A few weeks ago, I wrote about between the current roots revival of , and and the “O Brother Where Art Thou” soundtrack, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary.
took me back a decade when I first found myself delving into old-timey roots music. I remember being drawn to the simple reverence of the music. Much of it was so straightforward, even if the players were crazy-talented. For me, it was impossible to not form a connection to these musicians — including , who was featured prominently on the soundtrack.
Here’s a scene from “O Brother” that left an impression on me. I love how it starts as a stark a cappella with only Krauss’ voice. And then it grows. One harmony, and then a whole lot more. It builds and waves, and you can’t help but feel that gospel sway.
This is just a reminder that Krauss and her vaunted bluegrass group, Union Station (which features Jerry Douglas), plays tonight. As with most of their shows, it’s a pleasure to be in the presence of such an angelic voice — but the instrumentation and skilled playing is what really brings everything home.
