DETROIT — General Motors Co. is hiring former Vice Chairman Bob Lutz to advise its senior leaders, continuing a relationship with a seasoned industry veteran.

The announcement on Friday formalizes the pairing, as the 79-year-old Lutz has been providing advice informally to the automaker since his retirement last year.

The continued relationship is a good move for GM, as Lutz has seen the automaker through various ups and downs, including when it sank into bankruptcy protection in June 2009 and received a federal bailout that sparked its restructuring.
