Denver police said today they believe 33-year-old Luiz Meza shot an unnamed victim to death in the parking lot of a southwest Denver club early Saturday morning.

Meza is being investigated for first-degree murder. Authorities are not releasing a photograph pending further investigation.

Police responded to reports of gunshots near MGM’s Restaurant and Lounge around 1:45 a.m. Saturday to find a man in the club parking lot with gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead a short time later at a local hospital.

Meza allegedly fled the parking lot in his truck and took officers on a brief chase before being taken into custody Saturday.

A search of Colorado Bureau of Investigations data shows no prior record for Meza.

The stretch of Morrison Road where MGM’s is located was the site last weekend of a 10- to 14-person melee at a different club.

In that fight, one man drew a machete and three ended up in the hospital.
