A backyard fire fueled by items that included propane and gasoline caused extensive damage Sunday in a Denver neighborhood.

Firefighters were trying to determine what started the fire at a home near the intersection of West Ninth Avenue and Lipan Street. Police were called just before 2 a.m. Sunday.

The fire was driven by tanks of gasoline, acetylene and propane that a resident kept in the backyard for welding projects. Firefighters said the flames extended into the first and second floors, burning so hot that nearly everything in the backyard and some objects on the other side of the alley were reduced to a charred and twisted mess.
