Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning is being re-evaluated by several doctors because of the slow progress in his rehab from offseason neck surgery, sources familiar with his medical condition told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen on Sunday.

However, the sources said that no new procedure on Manning’s neck is scheduled at this time.

Raiders go with two QBs

OAKLAND, Calif. — Despite a roster tilted heavily toward the offense, Raiders coach Hue Jackson said he’s comfortable carrying only two quarterbacks into the regular season.

Oakland’s decision to cut Trent Edwards left the team with only starter Jason Campbell and backup Kyle Boller. The Raiders also have Terrelle Pryor, but the former Ohio State star can’t practice with his teammates until after serving a five- game NFL suspension.

That leaves little margin for error — or injury — as Oakland prepares for its season opener in Denver on Sept. 12.

Bears acquire safety Meriweather

CHICAGO — The Bears bolstered their secondary by signing two-time Pro Bowl safety Brandon Meriweather to a one-year contract.

Meriweather was a first- round pick with 244 tackles and 12 interceptions over four seasons with the Patriots.

In 2009, he had a career- high five interceptions and made the first of two straight Pro Bowls.

Ravens sign Gurode

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — The Ravens gave former Cowboys Pro Bowl center Andre Gurode a one-year contract.

Gurode, who played for the University of Colorado, was signed to be the backup behind six-time Pro Bowl center Matt Birk, who had surgery on his left knee at the beginning of training camp.

Suspected drowning at home of Texan

RICHMOND, Texas — A man apparently drowned in the swimming pool behind the home of Texans defensive end Antonio Smith, authorities said.

Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Capt. James Burger said the body of Engram Lamar Crenshaw, 37, was discovered Sunday morning, after a party at Smith’s home.

Footnotes.

The Jets waived linebacker Aaron Maybin one day after the former Buffalo bust made New York’s initial 53-player roster and claimed backup quarterback Kevin O’Connell off waivers from Miami.

• The Giants signed running back Andre Brown, who had two carries last season for the Broncos, to their practice squad.
