Denver and Colorado Springs have among the most speed traps in the United States and Canada with Denver ranking fifth and Colorado Springs ranking eighth, according to the National Motorists Association.

Denver had 10.9 speed traps per 100,000 residents and Colorado Springs had 7.2 speed traps, according to the organization.

The top five states with speed traps include Colorado – ranked fifth – and Wyoming, which ranked fourth.

Wyoming has 9.2 speed traps per 100,000 residents and Colorado has 9.1 speed traps per 100,000.

The only states having more speed traps were Vermont, New Hampshire and Michigan.

The survey was based on the highest number of speed traps reported in the last two years.

Ahead of Denver as far as individual cities were Livonia, Mich.; Windsor, Ont.; Orlando, Fla, and Las Vegas, Nevada.

Chicago ranked 23rd, Los Angeles, 24th and New York, NY, 25th.

The NMA has posted the speed trap sites on its National Speed Trap Exchange which identifies the specific locations of thousands “of chronic speed traps in the United States and Canada.”

The NMA said information about each listing is “enhanced” by commentary from motorists who have encountered the police operations.

“The drivers’ rights organization hopes that motorists safely anticipate, rather than suddenly react to, ticketing operations known as speed traps,” said the NMA.Howard Pankratz: 303-954-1939 or hpankratz@denverpost.com.
