VALLECITO, Colo.—U.S. Forest Service officials say ATV tracks once again have been found at the end of Middle Mountain Road heading into the Weminuche Wilderness, where motorized use is prohibited.
The road in southwest Colorado was once closed to vehicles past Tuckerville, but officials opened it in 2009 so the public could drive to a parking lot near the wilderness boundary and walk to a scenic overlook. Since then, there have been multiple instances of ATVs and pickup trucks driving into the wilderness area past signs that say “No Motorized Vehicles Beyond this Point.” This year, a gate blocking access to the wilderness area was removed and damaged.
Officials say they’ll probably move the gate farther from the wilderness boundary to keep people away unless someone turns in the perpetrators.
