ASPEN, Colo.—The Aspen/Pitkin County Airport will come to a near-halt next week so the airport can complete construction on a runway extension in time for ski season.

The Aspen Daily News reports ( ) that the airport will be closed to all but one daily flight from next Tuesday through Thursday. That will allow the airport to start the final stretch of construction on a $15.4 million runway project.

Construction began in April and is projected to be complete by early November.

For most of September and October, as construction crews lay down the last bit of asphalt on the extension, the usable runway length will be shortened to 6,500 feet.

On six days, the runway will be further shortened to 6,000 feet for safety reasons.
