And the winner is: Green Doctors, with Sungold, Japanese Black Trifele, Super Sweet 100, Chadwick and Snow White Cherry tied for second.

If you’re wondering what the contest was, you’re likely not a lover of heirloom tomatoes. But there were 150 people under a north Boulder big top Saturday afternoon, savoring the sun-kissed fruits of fall at the 2011 Love Apple Festival.

Participants grazed on tomatoes — 78 different kinds — during the event organized by garden writer and Colorado State University extension agent Carol O’Meara and Harlequin’s Gardens, a Boulder nursery specializing in native plants and heirloom vegetable starts.

Kristi Anderson and her husband, John Gregson, came so they’d be better able to pick their favorites at the farmers market.

“We love tomatoes. We love heirlooms,” Anderson said, adding that a small yard and a vegetable-loving dog keep them from growing their own.

Tomatoes are difficult to grow in Colorado, with its short growing season and hot, dry wind. The tasting was to discover what tomato varieties do best here.
