Jason Giambi never knew he would enjoy the view from the twilight this much. At 40, Giambi is having a blast swinging the bat as Todd Helton’s backup. Giambi hit a two-run homer off Bronson Arroyo in the first, his 13th in 119 at-bats. That’s one per every nine ABs. The NL home run leader, Albert Pujols, has hit one every 14.8 ABs.
Scary moment.
Mark Ellis was forced to leave in the sixth after being drilled on the helmet by Reds right-hander Carlos Fisher. Ellis walked away none the worse for wearing Fisher’s 93-mph fastball and could play today.
Mound matters.
Excuses don’t fly in the major leagues, but injuries have factored heavily in the Rockies’ dismal season. To wit: Today, Drew Pomeranz will become the 13th Rockies pitcher to start a game in 2011, five more than the Rox used last season.
