PITTSBURGH — Troy Polamalu never planned on leaving the Pittsburgh Steelers. Still, the defending AFC champions didn’t want to take any chances, signing the star safety to a contract extension through the 2014 season. Terms were not immediately disclosed.
Polamalu, the 2010 NFL defensive player of the year, actually signed the contract at Pittsburgh International Airport on Saturday just before the team boarded a plane to Baltimore in advance of today’s game.
The 30-year-old took to his Twitter account to announce the deal, tweeting “I am happy to say that I will retire a Pittsburgh Steeler!”
• The Carolina Panthers and strong safety Charles Godfrey, who has started 43 games over the past three seasons and led the team last season with five interceptions, agreed to a five-year contact extension.
• The Seattle Seahawks signed former New Orleans Saints defensive tackle Anthony Hargrove, adding depth to a depleted defensive line.
• The Oakland Raiders will be without tight end Kevin Boss (knee strain) for their opener against the Broncos on Monday night.
• Hall of Famer Lee Roy Selmon, who died last week two days after suffering a stroke, was remembered at services this weekend — in Lutz, Fla., on Friday and in Oklahoma City on Saturday.
Tseng, Yang are tied
ROGERS, Ark. — Defending champion Yani Tseng shot a 4-under 67 and Amy Yang had a 64 to share the second-round lead at the LPGA Tour’s NW Arkansas Championship at 9-under.
The top-ranked Tseng, the LPGA Championship and Women’s British Open winner, leads the tour with four victories this season and has seven overall wins this year. Yang is winless on the LPGA Tour.
• James Kingston of South Africa and Garry Orr of Scotland each had a 66 for 54-hole totals of 10-under, and are tied for the lead of KLM Open in Hilversum, Netherlands.
• Britain & Ireland won four straight singles matches to hold off a comeback by the United States and take a 7-5 lead going into the final day of the Walker Cup in Aberdeen, Scotland.
Klitschko defends WBC title
WROCLAW, Poland — Vitali Klitschko defeated Polish challenger Tomasz Adamek by technical knockout to retain his WBC heavyweight title.
The referee stepped in 2 minutes, 20 seconds into the 10th round to stop Klitschko after an utterly dominant performance by the Ukrainian.
The 40-year-old Klitschko (43-2, 40 knockouts) was 6 inches taller than his opponent and used his size advantage, with the 34-year-old Adamek (44-2) staggering back in the second, sixth and ninth rounds.

Juan Jose Cobo closed in on the Spanish Vuelta title after holding on to the overall lead in the 20th stage won by Daniele Bennati of Italy. Bennati sprinted in front of the pack in the final yards to win the 115-mile course from Bilbao to Vitoria in 4 hours, 39 minutes, 20 seconds.
• Formula One leader Sebastian Vettel earned the pole position for today’s Italian Grand Prix in Monza with relative ease, extending Red Bull’s perfect streak of poles to all 13 races this season.
• Two-time Stanley Cup winner Cory Stillman announced his retirement to become a player development assistant with the Florida Panthers.
