BOULDER, Colo.—A 32-year-old woman faces up to life in prison if convicted of a rare murder charge in a fatal car wreck near Clover Basin Reservoir.
The Longmont-Times Call reports ( ) that a Boulder judge Thursday ruled that prosecutors may pursue a first-degree murder, extreme indifference charge against Lisa Norton of Boulder. She is the suspect in a June 26 wreck that killed Gabriel Nielsen and seriously injured his 2-year-old daughter and 35-year-old sister.
The University of Colorado student was grocery shopping.
Prosecutors say Norton was two days into probation on an alcohol-related driving conviction and had spent the day drinking at bars in disregard for human life. Norton fled the scene by trying to swim away.
Norton faces several other charges, including two counts of vehicular assault and DUI.
