Fort Collins-based Tandem Select, a background screening company, has been acquired by Sterling Infosystems, Inc. of New York City.

Tandem Select, founded in 1995, has 48 employees and reported 2010 revenue of $5.2 million.

It conducts drug testing and background checks during the hiring process for employers.

Sterling Infosystems said the acquisition brings together two of 2011’s Inc. 5000 fastest growing companies.

“This acquisition will allow their focus and skill in product innovation to complement Sterling’s initiatives and global influence,” said William Greenblatt, founder and chief executive of Sterling. “We’re very excited about what this will mean for the future of the background screening industry.”

Infosystems, founded in 1975, is the third-largest background screening company in the world. It offers student screening services, corporate due diligence and background investigation services, occupational health services and employment-related business tax consulting.
