Students at an Aurora charter school were evacuated briefly from their building today by a hand grenade scare.
The incident happened at AXL Academy, 14100 E. Jewell Ave., said Bob Friel, an Aurora Police Department spokesman.
Investigators determined that the grenade was not a live device, the ordnance had been drilled out and it would not have detonated.
“It was a practice grenade,” Friel said.
Still, the initial discovery caused a stir in the college-preparatory charter school, with students from preschool through 8th grade, and the school was briefly evacuated.
The device was found in a student’s backpack and school staff called police.
Details on measures taken against the student, if any, were not immediately available.
