Class 5A

Regis Jesuit (1-1) vs. Pomona (2-0)

6 tonight, North Area Ath. Complex

On the way to the 2010 title game, Regis Jesuit whipped the Panthers 42-7 in nonleague. . . . The 5A No. 3 Raiders, who opened 2011 with a four-point loss to defending 4A champion Valor Christian, crushed Arvada West 49-0 last week behind two rushing touchdowns by Jordan Jungers and two scoring receptions by Wesley Hackemer. . . . Fourth-ranked Pomona has yet to be seriously challenged with victories over Cherry Creek and Mountain Vista. Dylan Carter has rolled to 309 yards rushing and four touchdowns.

Cherokee Trail (1-1) at Mullen (1-1)

5:30 tonight, Brother Bernard Kinneavy de La Salle Stadium

The Class 5A nonleague matchup will be on ESPNU. . . . You probably know that Mullen’s 34-game winning streak ended last week against Grandview, the same program that gave the sixth-ranked Mustangs their loss before they went on their tear, in 2008. . . . The Cougars, semifinalists in 2010, are coming off a 21-20 loss to Heritage despite two touchdowns by Austin Ruff.

Douglas County (2-0) vs. Columbine (2-0)

7 tonight, Jefferson County Stadium

Douglas County took its lumps a year ago, finishing 2-8 and missing the 32-team postseason field, but has come through so far by slipping past Doherty by four points in the 2011 opener and rallying past Fort Collins 39-38 in overtime in Week 2. . . . Kai Perea and Trey Smith each scored two touchdowns for the Huskies last week. . . . No. 5 Columbine has put up 90 points in two outings behind the Brothers McDondle, Cameron (four touchdowns) and Bernard (two), and Noah Thompson (three).

Bear Creek (2-0) vs. Grandview (1-1)

1 p.m. Saturday, Legacy Stadium

The 5A No. 7 Bears won against a California team by two points, then came home to put Gateway under the mercy rule (48-0). . . . Bear Creek has thrown for seven touchdowns with Sean Flanagan spreading the ball around. . . . Last week, the Bears returned two fumbles for a touchdown and had a kickoff return for another. . . . Fact is, second- ranked Grandview is healthier after having assorted issues in Zero Week. . . . Wolves tight end Evan Baylis, committed to Oregon, appears bigger, faster and stronger than a year ago, and his play on defense has been noticeable.

Class 4A

Wheat Ridge (1-1) vs. Longmont (3-0)

7 p.m. Friday, Everly-Montgomery Field

Last week’s setback to Castle View for No. 8 Wheat Ridge, runner-up a year ago, was news. The Farmers had no losses during the regular season in 2008 (when they won the 4A state championship) and one in each of the past two seasons. . . . 4A No. 3 Longmont has yet to be challenged. The Trojans have won by an aggregate 131-28, most recently 41-6 over Standley Lake. . . . Longmont QB Forrest Wetterstrom is 24-of-32 passing with seven TDs.

Pueblo West (2-0) at Greeley West (1-1)

7 p.m. Friday, District 6 Stadium

The 4A No. 7 Cyclones have won nine of their past 13 games. . . . Pueblo West junior Derek Jackson has rushed for 327 yards and five touchdowns. . . . Greeley West senior Brandon Gallatin threw for 164 yards and two touchdowns in a season-opening victory over 5A Montbello before Monarch held the Spartans to one touchdown last week.

Monarch (2-0) vs. Broomfield (2-0)

7 p.m. Friday, Elizabeth Kennedy Stadium

This longtime matchup not only is huge in Boulder County, but throughout 4A. . . . Monarch, which won 56-0 against a Florida school before taking a 21-7 toughie at Greeley West, runs the ball about as good as anyone on an annual basis in the class. . . . No. 6 Broomfield has downed two 5A foes — 18-6 at home against Fruita Monument and 38-23 on the road against Legacy. . . . The Eagles’ Angelo Perez has thrown for three touchdowns.

Class 3A

Conifer (1-1) at Holy Family (2-0)

6 tonight, Mike Gabriel Stadium

Conifer lost 42-20 to D’Evelyn in its opener, then won by the same score against Centaurus. . . . Twelve Lobos have carried the ball, led by Patrick Marshall’s 246 yards, 160 against Centaurus. . . . Holy Family, which won last year’s meeting 24-9, had a 46-point laugher against Steamboat Springs before outlasting Erie last week by 20-9. . . . David Sommers (428 yards passing for four touchdowns) and Connor Clay (321 yards rushing, three touchdowns) lead the Tigers.

Class 8-man

La Veta (2-0) at Hoehne (2-0)

7 p.m. Friday

The Redskins, favorites once the 8-man West Conference’s Mountain Division begins play, are regarded as speedy. Through two weeks, they have put up 96 points, including 72 in a Week 1 thrashing of Primero’s Bulldogs. . . . Top-ranked Hoehne, the defending state champion on a 15-game winning streak, is rolling behind Martin Waln’s 351 yards rushing and three touchdowns. . . . Farmers QB Sawyer Schafer has 199 yards passing and three TDs.
