PHOENIX—American Indian tribes in Arizona and New Mexico will get a combined $15.4 million in federal grant money aimed at improving public safety on reservations.

The Department of Justice says it has awarded $118 million to nearly 150 American Indian and Alaska Native communities. Associate Attorney General Tom Perrelli made the announcement Wednesday during the Four Corners Indian Country Conference in Colorado.

Tribes were able to secure the funding from three justice programs through one application. Tribes had advocated for the single application, saying it would improve their chances at receiving funding. The department gave out the first round of grants under that application process a year ago.

The Hualapai (WAHL’-uh-peye) Tribe received the largest share of Arizona’s $10.2 million in funding, with $2.8 million.

Jemez (HAY’-mehs) Pueblo secured $1.3 million of New Mexico’s $5.2 million.
