A trailer carrying 30 Shetland ponies rolled over on Interstate 70 in Eagle County Tuesday night, killing one of the animals, authorities said today.

Rescuers needed more than two hours to free the rest of them after a pickup towing the trailer lost control on the I-70 ramp at U.S. Highway 6 between Minturn and Vail.

Neither the driver, who has not been named, nor his passenger was hurt.

The surviving Shetlands were taken to the Eagle County Fairgrounds and appeared to be in “fairly good shape,” according to statement from the Eagle River Fire Protection District.

The rescue, along with a diesel spill from the pickup, closed the ramp and U.S. Highway 6 for about three hours.
