Tonight’s cross-classification showdown between unbeatens Valor Christian and Pomona has lost some of its luster.

Pomona has suspended at least a dozen players — including multiple major contributors — for drinking at a party last weekend, according to a Pomona High School source.

The players will return for next week’s game against Arvada West, according to another Pomona source.

Tonight’s game, set for 6 p.m. at the North Area Athletic Complex, is the Denver Post game of the week. Valor, ranked No. 1 in 4A and a two-time defending state champion, and Pomona, No. 3 in 5A, are both 3-0.

Pomona is fresh off a 24-17 victory over Regis Jesuit. The Panthers beat Cherry Creek (2-1) in Week 1, and followed it with a victory over Mountain Vista (2-1).

Valor Christian easily handled Grandview (2-1) in their first game, and has since beat Regis Jesuit (1-2) and Rampart (1-2)

“It’ll still be a tough game,” Valor Christian coach Brent Vieselmeyer said this afternoon. “They get after it, man. … We’ll still have our work cut out for us.”
