The Department of Energy on Thursday awarded research grants to two renewable-energy projects in Colorado. Abengoa Solar Inc., which has offices in Lakewood, received a $3.6 million grant to develop a new type of tower to convert and store energy from a concentrating solar plant. The University of Colorado at Boulder received $1.2 million to improve the ability of all types of solar cells to convert sunlight into electricity.
