DENVER—Backers of an initiative that would let private employees and city workers earn up to 72 hours of paid sick days a year are using the deadly listeria outbreak to promote their cause.

A mailer by Campaign for a Healthy Denver features a photo of cantaloupe next to a dish of pasta suggesting people can make food safer by making sure workers handling food are healthy.

According to the Denver Post ( ), opponents to the measure that will appear on Denver’s Nov. 1 ballot say the mailing is in poor taste.
