Thieves in Wheat Ridge are stealing air conditioning units and likely selling them as scrap metal, police said.
At least seven businesses have fallen victim to the thieves since March 1 and owners have suffered about $45,000 in losses, according to a Wheat Ridge Police Department media release.
One business took a $15,000 hit when its air conditioning system was swiped.
“This is a huge expense for a small business to absorb; especially in tough economic times,” police said.
Air conditioners and systems are targets because they’re typically set out of the public’s sight and there are few, if any, obstacles to deter thieves.
The units are likely stripped down and the copper and aluminum sold as scrap metal.
Fencing around units with locked gates and adequate lighting can help deter thefts, police said.
Wheat Ridge police offer a class, Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED), to help business owners and the public learn how to avoid being victimized. For more information on the CPTED program call 303 235-2910.
Police urge the public to call 911 to report suspicious activities and help protect homes, businesses and property. The departments non-emergency number is 303 237-2220.
