THORNTON — Rumor has it, D’Evelyn has running backs.
It’s true, although they’re a lot like ghosts — they are largely invisible and not really talked about until October.
That’s because the Jaguars are all about the aerial assault, which they once again unleashed Saturday in a 56-18 road thrashing of Skyview in a Class 3A Metro North League game.
In fact, the passing game went so well — sophomore quarterback Cody Marvel threw for 332 yards and five touchdowns — that the Jaguars unveiled their endangered species with a handful of running plays in the latter stages to run out the clock.
“They knew if we got a lead they’d start to get a few touches,” said Jaguars receiver Connor Skelton, who caught seven passes for 165 yards and three touchdowns. “They were excited about that.”
By now, the story is known about Marvel, the underclassman fill-in for starter Caleb Flack, who is still out because of the lingering effects of a concussion. Marvel again was marvelous, as his five TDs and one interception left him with 25 and four for the season.
“Our receivers have been fantastic all year,” said Marvel, who also threw TDs to Alec Comito and Anthony Porreco. “They’ll make plays if I get the ball anywhere near them.”
Skyview (4-1, 1-1), which got two touchdowns from running back Kyle Bowers, remained in striking distance at the half at 28-18.
But the Wolverines were blitzed 28-0 in the second half and suffered a handful of injuries, most notably an apparent left ankle injury to receiver Drew Martinez (seven receptions for 169 yards before leaving late in the third quarter).
Wolverines quarterback Sergio Lara threw for 218 yards and a touchdown, but was picked off twice. He also recorded the lone interception against Marvel from his cornerback position, but it was one of the few times Skyview was able to halt the Jaguars (4-1, 2-0).
“It’s always tough to cover all the receivers, especially if they have great ones like D’Evelyn does,” said Lara, whose team defeated D’Evelyn last season. “I give them props because they have amazing receivers.”
